Major New Youth Report Highlights Priorities for Young People Across Cheshire West and Chester |
Comprehensive assessment reveals key needs and barriers faced by the borough's youth |
A groundbreaking report released today by the Cheshire West and Chester Youth Partnership offers an in-depth look into the aspirations and challenges of young people throughout the borough.
Commissioned by the Youth Partnership and supported by the Westminster Foundation, the Youth Needs Assessment was conducted by Youth Focus North West.
Engaging over 500 participants—including young individuals, parents, carers, and professionals—the study utilized surveys, focus groups, and interviews to gather comprehensive insights.
The findings underscore several critical areas:
Safe and Inclusive Spaces: There is a significant demand for secure, welcoming environments where youth can connect with trusted adults.
Mental Health and Life Skills Support: Young people are calling for enhanced mental health services, life skills education, and assistance in preparing for the workforce.
Overcoming Barriers: Challenges such as financial constraints, transportation issues, and a lack of inclusive local programs hinder youth engagement.
Improved Communication: There is a need for better awareness and communication regarding available services and opportunities for young people.
Amanda Perraton, Executive Director for Children and Families at Cheshire West and Chester Council, emphasized the importance of these insights:
"This report makes clear what young people want and need: spaces to feel safe, support when they need it, and a real say in decisions that affect them. I'm proud that we've taken the time to listen. With the backing of the Westminster Foundation and our partners, we now have a strong platform to improve services and do more for young people right across the borough."
Key recommendations from the report include:
Early Mental Health Support: Investing in proactive mental health services and outreach programs.
Youth-Led Spaces: Developing environments designed with and for young people to foster engagement and learning.
Accessible Transportation: Enhancing travel options to ensure youth can participate in activities, particularly in rural areas.
Strengthening Partnerships: Building robust collaborations across public and voluntary sectors to support youth initiatives.
Effective Promotion: Utilizing schools and social media to better communicate available youth services.
Caroline da Cunha, Cheshire Grant Manager at the Westminster Foundation, highlighted the significance of the report:
"We are proud to support this important piece of work in Cheshire West and Chester. It is vital that young people's voices shape the services and spaces they rely on. This report not only amplifies those voices but lays the groundwork for positive, lasting change—especially for those who face the greatest barriers."
Sarah Lanchin, Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Youth Focus North West, added:
"Young people were at the heart of this process not just as participants, but as co-creators. Their honesty, creativity, and insight have shaped a report that reflects their lived experience. We are grateful to every young person, parent, carer, and youth worker who contributed, and we look forward to seeing their ideas turned into action."
In response to the report's findings, several initiatives have been launched to address the identified needs. For instance, the Better Start programme in Winsford has been extended to support 16-25-year-olds not in education, employment, or training, aiming to improve life skills and employability. Additionally, the ForCheshireWest Fund continues to empower local communities by supporting grassroots organizations tackling key issues such as health, education, and safe communities.
These efforts reflect a concerted commitment to addressing the priorities highlighted by young people across Cheshire West and Chester, ensuring they have the support and opportunities needed to thrive. |
